Propellerhead Reason 6.5 - Part I

For about a month ago I decided to finally buy a music tool - Reason
by Propellerhead version 6.5.

I realized
that the tool would fit me perfectly because I do not have particularly
many electronic devices to use for creating audio but can then use the various
instruments, effects and mixing tools included in the program.

What finally convinced me to buy Reason was the new feature to record audio directly in the program - "Audio tracks" and then adding effects. It really is a great feature, and for me it was the final piece needed to make a complete tool for music production.

I now use
a master keyboard (my old synth) to record instruments via MIDI, and to the computer via USB.
I can through my master keyboard record all instruments Reason provide.
It suits me fine because then I can sit and do all the music in front of my computer and just turn to record a sequence.

To be able to bring in outside sounds so I use a small mixer - Yahama MG124CX.  It is a lightweight and portable stereo effects mixer that offers 12 channels, four buses, and a wealth of advanced features (however, one should really add to the effects last in the final mix. But I'm not always so good). I let then "Monitor Out" on the mixer going into my sound card "Line-in" jack. My sound card in the computer is by the way a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty.

I had some trouble
to get my ASIO drivers work for both input and output in Reason. At first I could not select "Line-in" as the active input channel but after reading
on various blogs and posts on the web and I also downloaded ASIO4ALL (a nice program), I could understand how to set the settings in WindowsIt was not totally easy. I also turned off my extra sound card in BIOS that is integrated into the motherboard of the computer so that it would not interfere.
I also run Windows 8 and have not really got used to all the settings I can make on my sound card.

However, I had problems with being able to listen to the track I recorded from the mixer and at the same time be able to play the generated sounds from Reason. I first tested to connect my headphones directly to the sound card. The sound "lagged" and it was awfully strange when I recorded for example the song.
My solution was instead to let the output of the sound card fed back to the mixer and then I plugged my headphones into the mixer instead.
I then got a problem with that I recorded the sound Reason produced. After testing different inputs on the mixer, I managed to solve it so now I have the perfect recording studio.

These are some audio-tracks from my latest song.  I'll tell you more about the song in a new blog-posts and post it on the archive in Dooob.

The Eagle

Have done a little update on Dooob with, among other things, that you can upload multiple files / versions of a song, and that it prints the length of each song.

Also put up a really old classic, The Eagle as we have done in many different versions. The version that is set now includes both singing from me and Martin. Feel free to check it out!

Ta nu och Ring (swedish song)

A very old song that I probably wrote over 10 years ago and where I sing in swedish. It was later in some version where even Martin is with and plays. We might post it.

You also find the song in the archive. Click at the link below:

Star Blast (instrumental song)

I've added a song I call "Star Blast" at Dooob, a instrumentuell song in the traditional spirit.

I am using my old synth - Kawai K4 to record the song along with a sequencer program on my computerI do not use the sounds from the Kawai synth here, but only to record the song. Instead the sounds are generated in my computer and I use MIDI to start and stop the sounds.

Have also worked with the song by adding compressors and then raised the noise level.

The website - Dooob is finally up!!!

At last I have come loose and fixed my and Martin's (Besa) site - DoooB, available to reach at http://dooob.se.

Dooob by the way was an old name that we used for our "Group" that contains the first letter of our names, Danny respectively. Besa, "D" & "B", and then we tied them together with a little "O"s so it looks nice.

Previously the site was just a hack in 10 minutes and looked miserable! I now used the web-theme from Twitters - Bootstrap to quickly get something that looks pretty good.

This is where I was going to post all the old and new music works.

Look at the archive for songs and information (see also link to right), http://dooob.se/archive.aspx.

I was going to fix so that I do not just upload the song but also write some information such as when the song was created, who has written music and lyrics, and the actual lyrics and chords and more.

I will very soon begin to post information seriously and write a bit in the blog.

Summer Night (instrumental song)

Today I was down in the basement with my daughter. She wanted to play with my synth and we played "Bamse" song that she likes. It's an old theme song to one of our old comics.

So I had to boot up my computer and synth again after a long time.

Then sat and played a bit with the synth and made up a little song that I recorded
with the sequencer.

Always good to record when you get some idea. After a few days you can pick up the song again and see if it is something that you want to continue work on.

Took probably not more than an hour to make the song, then I published the song in high raw format to play with it further in another program by regulating decibels etc.

Discovered that many music programs in which music is created is not so good on the mixing and mastering.

I call it "Summer Night" as long ...

For something completely different...it's really a nice evening here in Sweden. Will soon start the grill ....jummie!
